Friends We Love is a daily curated blog, original web series + inspirational hub devoted to showcasing innovative artists + creative content from NYC + around the globe. Mike + Moni will be stopping by and chatting with us about their upcoming projects.

Jelani Olushola Bodden better known as Jackz was born in Brooklyn in 1993 and raised in Queens New York. At age 5 he discovered his love for writing, by writing poems and stories. At age 11 he wrote his first song and at age 13 he recorded his first track, from then on his dream to pursue music was born. Jackz was raised on all types of music growing up, including mostly R&B, Salsa, Soul, and Hip Hop. His mother loved to listen to Prince, Stevie Wonder, Take 6, and Jill Scott, and so did Jackz. He loved the art of producing, rapping, and song writing, and with so much talent he decided to pursue it all. The young producer, hip hop artist, and songwriter, has released his debut album which is entitled “Above Sound”. Jackz’s Above Sound represents Jackz as a perso. Diverse, creative, a little bit of everything, from party to love and deep thought. And it doesn’t end at just music; Jackz has appeared in acting roles such as recording artist Joell Ortiz’s music video “Call Me” starring as young Joell Ortiz.

Video: 3 Titans "The Life of a Scholar" (feat/ Menahan Street Band)

PROPS 2 THE KIDS !
The 3 Titans, Khalil Jackson, Jorden Plaines, and Dallas Ifill, are rhythmically gifted fifth-graders with their sights set on higher education. On their debut 7 for Dunham Records, C-O-L-L-E-G-E b/w Life of a Scholar, the precocious eleven-year-olds trade rhymes about the benefits of going to college and the determination it takes to get there over two sides of old-school, hard-as-nails (and refreshingly sample-free) beats provided by the notorious Menahan Street Band.

Happy Birthday Malcolm X

Today would have been Malcolm X’s 85th birthday.

YUME X BROOKLYN BODEGA PRESENTS: SHOW & PROVE

Brooklyn Bodega and YUME Presents: Show & Prove takes place Thursday, May 20th at the Public Assembly, 70 North 6th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Local and independent talent will get the chance to put their skills on display in the heart of the hip-hop nation. The winner will earn the right to rock this years’ Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival stage with some of Hip-Hops’ most legendary figures such as De La Soul, Smif-N-Wessun and Buckshot.

YC the Cynic: Coming from Hunts Point, in the South Bronx, YC brings the Hip-Hop scene back to its birthplace while bettering his community as part of the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective.

Kalil Kash: Hailing from New Jersey, Kalill Kash is on the seemingly endless struggle to be heard as an Emcee. No need for him to brag, his music speaks for itself.

Gods’Illa: With the ability to tell stories through powerful rhymes that transcend life, Gods’Illa of Brooklyn by way of Maryland promises to truly be a cut above the rest. The brothers in this group vary in age as they do in style crafting a sound collectively described as “Universal.”

Problemaddicts: The Problemaddicts are a 5-man squad of emcees out of Massachusetts assembled by and including Executive Producer Tone, Vorheez (formerly of Lords of tha Fly), Force (also of The Alchemystics), Black Buddha (multiple freestyle tournament winner and former WSKB DJ) and 1ne Man sound (also of Lyke Minds).

Lyriciss: This DMV Emcee has been inducted into a group of elite musicians with URB Magazine’s Next 1000 Program and has built a strong presence as an up-and-coming force on the world’s most credible music blogs and websites, including 2dopeboyz.comillroots.com and many more.

MikeFlo: While in Atlanta, New York’s MikeFlo linked with U.N.S.I.G.N.E.D., a collective of 5 emcees from different regions. His straight ahead, nonconformist style earned him the respect of his peers and innovative stage performance makes him a crowd favorite.

Lava 1 & 2's Extravaganza Graff Art Exhibit -Saturday May 15th

Lava 1 & 2's Extravaganza Graff Art Exhibit -

For everybody who thought graffiti started in the early 80′s, Lava AKA Straight Man will be at the Maysles Cinema to set the record straight. Lava 1&2 started writing in 1970, when he wasn’t taking care of business as Supreme Commander of the Black Spades in Manhattan or creating the first Hip Hop flyers with Phase 2. The Black Spades went on to become Zulu Nation and Graf blew up in the 80′s but the generation that invented the language and vocabulary didn’t get the props they should have. Lava’s Extravaganza Graf Art Exhibit gives us all a chance to act like we know, with work by artists like Cornbread, Clyde, James Top and Tracy 168.
The evening includes a short multimedia presentation and biographical film on Lava, a group art show and reception.

Other Special Guests: SONIC, REE, PRIZ, DOSE, INK76, CRANE, STAN, BAMA, CORNBREAD, NIC 707, CLYDE, KET, STAYHIGH149, SEN-ONE, TRACY168, MIKE171, SJK, RIFF170, FLINT707, BOM5, COCO144, JAMESTOP, SPAR, FDT56, & SELO456.

Hosted by "STRAIGHTMAN"
Music by D.J. CHUCK CITY

Doors open at 7pm
18 and over

The 6th Annual - BROOKLYN HIP-HOP FESTIVAL

BROOKLYN HIP-HOP FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2010 Headliner

DE LA SOUL

Brooklyn Bodega, producers of the 6th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival (BHF), is excited to announce this year’s headliner - De La Soul.  Since 1989, De La Soul (Pos, Dave and Mase) have been a cornerstone of Hip-Hop music and culture.  From the groundbreaking album “3 Feet High and Rising” to “Grind Date” De La is simply one of the best to ever do it.
“To be honest, we have been trying to get De La Soul to headline the Festival since we first came up with the idea in 2005.  On many levels they are the perfect flag bearers for our mission to use Hip-Hop as an agent of change. For over 20 years they have traveled the world inspiring MC’s, producers, DJ’s and fans alike.  I can think of no better artist to usher the Festival into its new home in Brooklyn Bridge Park.” – Wes Jackson, Executive Director, The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. In past years, the Festival has featured headliners such as Brand Nubian (2005), Big Daddy Kane (2006), Ghostface Killah (2007), KRS-ONE (2008) and Pharoahe Monch (2009). This year, De La Soul will be the anchor of the six-day-long Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, performing on Saturday, July 10th alongside a variety of Old School, New School, Funk, Soul, local and International artists on the DUMBO waterfront.

DATE: July 10th, 2010   TIME: 12-8PM
LOCATION: Tobacco Warehouse and Brooklyn Bridge Plaza
(26 New Dock Street, Brooklyn, NY)
Tickets go on sale Monday May 3rd at www.BrooklynBodega.com, the official home of the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. On this date, organizers are launching theBodega Soldiers Program, which is their way of thanking the members of the Bodega Family who have turned out time and time again to make the Festival into NYC’s largest Hip-Hop cultural event.

PLEASE NOTE: Those Bodega Soldiers who purchase their tickets by May 21st will get access to premium packages at no additional charge. Bodega Soldiers will also automatically be entered to win backstage VIP packages.

The calendar for the 6th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival kicks off with Show & Prove on Monday, July 5th.  This Hip-Hop showcase of independent and local talent is the final event of Brooklyn Bodega’s three month Show & Prove competition,

Tuesday, July 6th will feature the Bodega Education Initiative, a day of panel discussions and seminars about the legendary producer, J Dilla. Speakers include Q-Tip, Ma Dukes Yancey, DJ Spinna and more.

Wednesday, July 7th is a mini Film Festival that features a variety of Hip-Hop films and a Q&A with established and burgeoning filmmakers.

Thursday, July 8th is a night dedicated to the backbone of Hip-Hop: the DJ. It will feature performances by the best DJs, from NYC to LA.

Friday, July 9th is the kick-off party to formally welcome Festival goers, past and current artists and community leaders to the 6th Annual BHF.

Saturday, July 10th is the culmination of the 2010 Festival. De La Soul, just ahead of a new album to be released this year, will headline on the DUMBO waterfront. Earlier in the day, we set it off with Family Day - a block party for families and children that celebrates the core message of Hip-Hop - social change and individual empowerment.
