The City Lore Gallery will host a discussion Generations on the Writers' Bench about the graffiti scene in New York City from the golden age to the present.

During the golden age of graffiti in New York City in the 70's and 80's, the Writers' Bench was located at 149th Street at the convergence of the 2 and 5 lines. It was a place where graffiti writers gathered to watch the art on the trains as they passed by. This infamous meeting spot served as the unofficial base for founders of a movement that forged the path for hip hop culture in New York City and the world at large. Evoking the same spirit of these underground meetings, City Lore invites panelists to convene and tell their stories of graffiti in NYC amongst Henry Chalfant and Martha Coopers' photographs. Join us in conversation between contemporary graffiti writers facing the challenges of an increasingly policed city and graffiti writers of the golden age whose work influenced an art form that continues to thrive in cities all over the country and the world.
