Rebel Starr & David E. Beats are the guests this Sunday 11/22 On The Circa '95 Show

What is NeoQuantumRetroMusic?  The new, the old — and the Space between. It’s soul that borders on rock, straddles trance-hop and flirts with funk, yet remains indescribably authentic. Call it underground or call it transcendent – but just don’t call it ordinary.
The planets aligned when original members Likwuid Stylez and Back Wordz (aka, Baxter P. Wordsworth) – both of whom were forces of nature in New York’s street battles, emcee challenges and underground  showcases – collided in a creative composite of cosmic proportions in 2007. And thus, Rebel Starr was born. As “3” represents completion and balance, the duo eventually added DJ Raydar Ellis, a music professor at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and a member of New York’s Revive Da Live, whose events shed light on the fusion of jazz and hip-hop in pop culture.
New York based Rebel Starr has performed at several venues, from Columbia University to Pennsylvania to South Carolina, and is a refreshing and permanent note in the medley that is New York’s music scene. The group has also opened for artists such as Lyfe Jennings, Talib Kweli and Bow Wow and had an appearance on MTV’s TRL in 2008. In 2009, the group was nominated the Underground Music Awards’ “Best Rap Duo” and was recently tagged “URB’s Next 1000” by URB Magazine.
Rebel Starr’s eclectic style combines social consciousness and holistic high jinks as potent strategics to conquer sound waves – bar by bar, block by block and, eventually, the universe.

Check out their new single here and link up with them via, Twitter, Myspace, YouTube, ReverbNation, and WordPress.

David E Beats -

As a triple threat (artist, producer, guitarist) David E Beats aims to reach both the head and the ear with his strong musical and lyrical abilities. His music is a genre-blurring blend of Hip Hop, Pop, R&B, Rock and Electro, an absolute tapestry of diverse musical influences. He succeeds to go from groundbreaking Hip Hop samples to high-electronic sounds reasonably. This artist's creativity follows none and his talent defies many. Hailing from Washington D.C, David E Beats was raised to the chant of a medley of Soul pioneers, respectively: The Moments, The Four Tops, Aretha Franklin; and the grunge-rock sound of bands such as Sound Garden and Nirvana. Before the age of 15, David E Beats had never listened to Rap music. He started to develop an interest in Hip Hop when he bought his first Rap CD, ''The Blueprint", by Jay Z.
His grind has been relentless since! His recent accomplishments prove that his drive and passion for music will constantly lead him to new heights! David E Beats was featured as the next artist to watch on Hip Hop Ruckus section ''On Da Come Up". Recent features include, Hip Hop DX, Digiwaxx; newspapers such as the Washington Afro-American Newspaper, Diamondback (University of Maryland); FM and AM radio on WHCR 90.3 FM, WCCR 640 AM, and many more. He also inked 2 sponsorship deals: 8 and 9 Clothing, Platform NYC.
Beats made significant strides in the music industry when he released his first mixtape, David E Beats BLVD (May 2009), a fusion of hip-hop, R&B and rock with smash singles "Walk In" dedicated to the underdog receiving radio plays(i.e: 89.9 FM in North Carolina) and the song “Her features” ,an ode to women. In June and August 2009, David E Beats had 2 Open Mic Showcase Tour in New York City with live performances at Voodoo Lounge and the infamous Bowery Poetry Club. He, then released "In Tha Lab" Freestyles Mix-tape Series 1, and is now gearing up to release his debut album “Exit”.

New rhyme by Mark Naison aka The Notorious Phd "A Recession Jam"

"A Recession Jam"

Notorious is here so don't complain
I'll be spitting rhymes like clouds bring rain
MC's that front better run for cover
We need jams that bring hope to our sisters and brothers

We're living in a world of hate and pain
Where justice fails, and greed's insane
Where the banks get bailed and the people starve
And the media lie while the rich live large

People need to take the country back
Fore the train we're riding leaves the Freedom Track
We need homes for the homeless and gyms for the kids
And release of dealers doing ten year bids

Recovery without jobs is a wrecking ball
It means  tracks that rot and bridges that fall
Will we watch our dreams die and our families shatter
If we don't have work, nothing else matters

Mark is probably best known for quoting Big Daddy Kane, "Pimpin Ain't Easy," on this Dave Chapelle Show clip but their is much more to him then that.

Read more about him on Wikipedia, check out his new book "The Rat That Got Away: A Bronx Memoir," and pick his brain on Facebook and Twitter.
Keep up the good work Mark.

P.S. Shout out to Wash Heights... Dave know what it is..

Born To Use Mics: Reading Nas's ILLMATIC

Hip-Hop Professor,  Dr. Dyson has written a book about Nas, one of NYC's most valuable emcees. Dr. Dyson is known for quoting rap lyrics when he speaks, a hip-hop head who wants to bring hip-hop into the classroom. Godfather aka El Padrino to the Circa '95 show- Mr. Bobbito Garcia is also included in the book sharing his experience with Nas.  I can't wait to pick this book up and read about Nas!

Here’s the description of Born to Use Mics: Reading Nas’ Illmatic.........

From the moment then nineteen-year-old Nasir “Nas” Jones began recording tracks for his debut album the hip-hop world was forever changed. Released in 1994, Illmatic, was hailed as a masterpiece and is one of the most influential albums in hip-hop history. In Born to Use Mics, Michael Eric Dyson and Sohail Daulatzai have brought together the brightest minds to reflect upon and engage one of the most incisive sets of songs ever laid down on wax.

I can't wait for this book!  It hit the shelves December 28 just in time for the Holidays...
(FYI: you can preorder it on Amazon now for only $12 - click here )

Shout out to my peoples at www.DaLeak.Com for doing a post about this as well!!  we all in this together sharing hip-hop with the world !

Introducing LIFE Is Living...

A national campaign that uses a new form of green spoken story telling — one that represents the diverse and changing perspectives on what it means to be environmentally just.

This campaign seeks to inspire people to take the value they see in their LIFE, and establish it powerfully as a new voice to define what it means to be logistically and psychologically included in the new, clean and green economies.
Life is worth living, and Living is Green.  For more info hit up their website here..

Housing is a Human Right Teaser from Housing is a Human Right on Vimeo.
Michael Premo and Rachel Falcone announce the Housing is a Human Right exhibit, an ongoing multimedia documentary portrait of the struggle for home in New York City.  Composed of oral narratives and photographs, along with testimonies and memories of home, woven and remixed with the help of turntablist DJ Oja Vincent, this collection of viscerally honest, first-person narratives serve as a reminder that home is as tenuous a space in New York City as the shelter that sustains it.

This is an ON-GOING project that is just beginning. In an effort to share with the community what it is we are doing, invite participation, feedback, and dialogue we are presenting a kick-off exhibit of 11 stories we have collected to date along with "remixed testimony" proclaiming the right to our home and housing. Come hear your neighbors and let your voice be heard!

About The Laundromat Project

The Laundromat Project is a community based arts organization committed to promoting the well-being of low-income communities of color. Understanding that creativity is a central component of healthy human beings; vibrant neighborhoods; and thriving economies, The LP's programs bring art to where people already are: the laundromat. Its two core programs, Works in Progress and Create Change Public Artist Residency Program, focus on making art education broadly accessible for all ages and skill levels, as well as providing professional development opportunities for artists of color looking to build or deepen a community-engaged art making practice by creating new public works in their own neighborhoods.

Thanks to the generosity of the owners of Wash and Play Lotto Laundromat Housing is a Human Right will play until Nov. 8th.

Don't Miss this unique event! Grab your laundry and spin through a cycle of stories.

Wash and Play Lotto Laundromat
81 Lafayette Avenue
Brooklyn, NY

Admission: A load of Laundry
Stories spins from around 1pm - 9pm everyday
