September 23rd marks a historic date of struggle in Puerto Rico, it also marks the 6 year anniversary of the assassination of Filiberto Ojeda Rios by the FBI. Lately, there have been student uprisings there along with violent clashes with police, as students fight for equal access to education and against tuition increases. The global reality of education is that everything is being privatized. In Chile, students have also been uprising. Here in New York City, students all over face a grim future with less jobs and more debt. We want to commemorate the spirit of the Grito de Lares by doing a Que Griten Los Estudiantes! Hip Hop Concert, to show solidarity with these student struggles. In English it means, Let the Students Shout! For many of us, Hip Hop is our voice of resistance. We will be joined by MCs and DJs from all over who rep for Puerto Rico, The Bronx, Chile, EL Salvador and more!!!

We will also have the Music Video Release for "Yo Soy Boricua" (Filmed in Boriken). Featuring two Hip Hop artists from Bieke (Vieques) named Lady M and MC Natra. Produced by Rephstar of Circa 95.

All proceeds from this event will go to The RDACBX, the autonomous Hip Hip Communtiy space in the Bronx, specifically the Nuestra America Media Lab which we will be opening up soon!
Stay tuned for workshop schedules on Photoshop, pro tools, final Cut and more media!

@Circa95 Making Moves in September

Greetings everyone,,

We've been busy getting ready to release our project, FREE LUNCH on 11.11.11. From running around to meetings, events, scheduling photoshoots, music videos and even a little time for yoga.. CIRCA '95 is getting ready for something epic! Here's a little of what we've been up to so far.....

BMI

We had a wonderful meeting with Porfirio Piña,  Senior Director of the Latin Division for BMI. He showed us around his new office at 7 World Trade Center.  Of course we played him some of our new tracks and in return he gave us some wonderful advice. Especially as independent artists it's important for us to take notes and continue to grow & learn. Thanks Popi and BMI for being so supportive of CIRCA '95.

BIKRAM YOGA

Patty has recenlty started practicing Bikram Yoga. From completing a 30-day challenge in August  (which means going every day for 30 days in a row) and continuing ever since.  Bikram Yoga is a system of yoga that Bikram Choudhury synthesized from traditional yoga techniques. Bikram classes are 90 minutes, 26 postures, 2 breathing excercises in a heated room  of 105°F. If you haven't tried it, we suggest you do! It's a wonderful experience and the benefits are too many to count. Check out  BIKRAM YOGA EAST HARLEM, a wonderful studio on 116th. They have an intro special, for $25.00 you can go unlimited for a week, includes a mat and towel. Just tell 'em Patty Dukes sent ya!

SEED THE PLAY

SEED is a new play by Radha Blank, Directed by Niegel Smith brought to you by The Classical Theater of Harlem and The Hip-Hop Theater Festival. Last Night, Friday Sept 16th was opening night and CIRCA '95 was invited to the premiere! A great group of people turned out at the National Black Theater in Harlem.  The play runs till Oct 6th and is a definate must see. We won't give too much away but if you do go, just know you will be our dappie!  For more information and tickets click here

El Museo: The (S) Files 2011 (@Toofly)

El Museo's Bienal: The (S) Files 2011 from EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO on Vimeo.

El Museo's Bienal: The (S) Files 2011 is El Museo del Barrio's sixth biennial of the most innovative, cutting-edge art created by Latino, Caribbean, and Latin American artists currently working in the greater New York area. This year's edition spreads all over the city, showcasing a record 75 emerging artists in seven different venues.
Aiming to expand the definition of contemporary Latino and Latin American art, The (S) Files 2011takes on a broad exploration of the visual energy, events, and aesthetics of the street. While considering the more conventional understandings of street art such as graffiti and mural painting, The (S) Files 2011 extends the definition of street art by also considering non-traditional art objects as well as works from other disciplines, including music and fashion.
